Munro College has two finalists in the
Jamaica Tourist Board's (JTB's) Public
Speaking Competition. Fourth formers Andre
Tate (H) and Donovan Hanson (PC) are the
only two finalist left in this competition.
They were originally narrowed down to 5
schools from nationwide entrants and
following weeks of intensive training, our
boys were selected as the finalists.
The competition entails giving a number of
prepared and impromptu speeches to several
audiences. The also toured the island and
stayed at several properties. This is to
prepare them for the regional competition.
JTB provided the training and
accommodations. The students from the five
schools were taken from one end of the
island to the next. Following this vigorous
two week training, a team of public speaking
specialists listened to their presentations
and adjudged Munro College's boys as the
best of all the contenders. Now they are up
against each other.
The winner will represent Jamaica and of
course Munro College in Puerto Rico. Again
they will be judged on their knowledge of
Jamaica's Tourism product and their ability
to present to audiences.
We are confident that our boys will do well
as we are the defending champions. Last
year, Eric McDonald, one of the UN delegates
was the winner. He has been a role model for
these younger boys. Those of you who have
skills in this area, may we ask for your
help? Upon winning, the student will need
all the help he can get in making
appearances, presenting, and generally just
being comfortable around "big wigs". The
nature of the competition is that he will be
judged from the very moment he steps off the
plane in Puerto Rico. The speech is only one
aspect so help where you can please in
providing guides.
The finals is scheduled for Tuesday,
08/22/07. May the better boy win!!
However the results go, Munro will
definitely be a winner once again.
Two other students, Orville Thompson, (C L6)
and Andrene Nelson (PC L6) are also
contending for case study with JTB. Both are
acting as a team and exploring the concept
of Heritage Tourism. Their competition is in
November but they have to send in drafts to
Mrs Housen.
Again, we wish them well. Winning means going
to France to represent the school and
Jamaica.
Incidentally, both boys are Head (Andrene) and
deputy head prefects (Orville). All four are
current members of Tourism Action Club (TAC)
at school.
